Quiziz (Quiziz.com ) is a web-based quizzing and testing tool created by Antik Gupta and Deepak Joy Cheenath in 2015. With this platform, students answer questions on their own device while responses are displayed in real time. Quizizz can be played on any device that has a web browser. However, quizzes can only be created on desktops and laptops. There are three modes for students to interact with the platform: team mode, classic mode, and test mode. Quizziz is completely free and there are no restriction for the number of quizzes that can be created or played. Quizizz works well in an environment where all students have access to technology and the instructor can project their screen. This tool can be used as an interactive element to increase student engagement as well as to gauge student understanding in real time as a formative assessment.

Quizziz is similar to another interactive quiz tool, Kahoot, but there are a few notable differences. Students are able to move at their own pace with Quizizz. The questions are therefore displayed on the student device as opposed to projected to the class like they are with Kahoot. There is real time feedback provided to students on individual basis. There is also a real-time leaderboard that is projected to the class so everyone can see overall class progress. A major advantage over Kahoot is the is the detailed analysis function at the end of the quiz that shows overall class accuracy, individual student accuracy, toughest question, and interesting facts about student performance. These data are saved automatically in the reports section of the creator portal.

The Quizizz creator portal includes many features that help find, design, and customize quizzes. The “find a quiz” function allows you to search through a wide variety of user created quizzes and also provides recommendations based on your user profile. Quizzes can also be saved as collections for later use. Self-created quizzes are easily found in a separate “My Quizzes” section where the quizzes can be sorted by access date or alphabetical order.

New quizzes are easily created, but are limited to multiple choice type questions. Questions do not seem to have a character limit which is an advantage over Kahoot which has a character limit of 120. Images and short audio clips can also be added to the questions for a more engaging experience. There can be up to 5 answers choices with single or multiple correct answer options. You can also choose custom “memes” that are used for feedback and encouragement

For K-12 applications, classes can be created in order to optimize data tracking and communication with parents. Quizzes can be assigned to these classes as homework or even tests. Furthermore, students in a classroom are able to complete assignments asynchronously without having to enter a session code by going to their assignments section of their student profile. Students can view their progress on their own reports page, as well. Progress on these measures can also be sent easily to parents via the parent summary report option included on the classes page.

I have been using this platform for about a year and find it to be a useful alternative to similar tools because of the self-paced nature of the quizzes and the data collection. I use Quizizz for fun formative assessments as the data tracking is more robust and easier to navigate than Kahoot. Most recently, I used this to review the key components of the QAR reading comprehension strategy. This helps me easily see which concepts the students have mastered and which need to be reviewed. I can also share this information with students during regular data chats. The students enjoy the platform for the most part, but some state that they prefer the competitive, head-to-head aspect of Kahoot.
